The Wayne State University softball team split a doubleheader against Purdue Northwest on April 9, beginning a six-game road trip. The Warriors won the first game 7-4, while the Pride came back to win the second game 7-5 after a four-run rally in the sixth inning.
This matchup is significant as it affects both teams’ standings in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wayne State competes at the NCAA Division II level and is based in Detroit, Michigan, according to the official website.
In Game 1, Sydney Long led Wayne State by pitching seven innings and allowing just six hits with four earned runs. Offensively, Molly Hool contributed two hits and two runs batted in. The victory ended a nine-game losing streak for Wayne State at Dowling Park; their last win there was on May 8, 2021.
Game 2 saw Purdue Northwest take an early lead before Wayne State responded with multiple runs across several innings. Despite holding leads of up to two runs during the contest, Wayne State allowed four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave Purdue Northwest control of the game. Hayden Batton took the loss for Wayne State after pitching over five innings.
