The Wayne State University softball team is set to conclude its six-game road trip with a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday, April 12. The games are scheduled to begin at noon Central Time. The Warriors currently hold a record of 14-19 overall and 6-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Rangers stand at 13-21 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
This matchup marks an important point in the season for both teams as they look to improve their standings within the conference. Wayne State has split its first two doubleheaders of this road swing, earning victories and losses against Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt.
In their previous meeting on March 28, Wayne State swept Parkside with scores of 3-2 and 1-0, evening the all-time series between the programs at 29 wins each. Sophomore Elly Koopman leads Wayne State with eleven multiple-hit games this season and has maintained a nine-game on-base streak. Junior Sydney Long has recorded four wins in her last five starts as pitcher, posting a strong earned run average during that span. Head coach Nicole Tines is now in her fifth year leading a squad that currently boasts one of its highest fielding percentages ever.
Parkside features standout player Mia Johnson, who is batting .479 this season with significant power numbers including ten home runs. Both Holly Lowenberg and Casey Jo Vermett have contributed over eighty innings pitched for Parkside this year under head coach Kristin Ortman.
Looking ahead, Wayne State will return home after Sunday’s games for four contests at Gary L. Bryce Field beginning April 18 against Ferris State. The following day will see Davenport visit Detroit for another doubleheader starting at noon.
