Wayne State women’s tennis edged by Findlay in close home match

The Wayne State University women’s tennis team, ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division II, lost 4-3 to No. 16 University of Findlay at home on Saturday. The match took place at the Doris J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility in Detroit.

Wayne State Warriors Women’s Tennis competes as part of the NCAA Division II and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The program operates from Detroit, Michigan and offers intercollegiate competition as part of Wayne State University’s athletics department.

In doubles play, Findlay won two out of three matches to secure the doubles point. Martyna Szpakowska and Justine Beaulieu defeated Ivanova Lucero and Valentina Salek in No. 2 doubles with a score of 7-6 (7-2). However, Malak Arafat and Dea Gorgidze lost their top-flight match 6-1, while Selin Kayakent and Rebecca Laynes also fell by the same score.

During singles competition, Arafat earned a win at No. 2 singles after dropping the first set 6-4 but coming back to win the next two sets 7-5 and 6-2. Szpakowska played at No. 3 singles; she lost her first set 6-1 but won the following sets 6-4 and 6-1.

Kayakent competed in the No. 4 position and defeated Audrey Ouellet from Findlay with scores of 6-2, 6-4.

Beaulieu faced Lucero again in singles at No. 5 but was defeated in straight sets: 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

At No. 6 singles, Shantala Uzcategui won her first set against Ivana Gombitova but then lost the next two sets.

Gorgidze’s match against Anamarija Kovacevic was suspended before completion.

The Wayne State Warriors will next play Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday, February 26, at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan.
