The Wayne State University women’s tennis team, currently ranked No. 22 nationally, will host the University of Findlay on Saturday, February 14, at the Doris J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility in Detroit.

Wayne State began its regular season with a 7-0 victory over Walsh University last Friday. In doubles play, Dea Gorgidze and Martyna Szpakowska secured a win in the top position. Freshmen Selin Kayakent and Rebecca Laynes also earned a victory at No. 3 doubles. The Warriors did not lose any singles matches during this opening contest.

Findlay enters the match as the No. 16-ranked team in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Oilers were selected as preseason favorites to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) title and have compiled a 2-1 record so far this season, with wins against Illinois Springfield and Ferris State, and their only loss coming against No. 19 Grand Valley State.

Findlay returns five players who received All-G-MAC honors last year: Anamarija Kovacevic and Polina Zaytseva were First-Team selections; Ivanova Lucero, Audrey Ouellet, and Valentina Salek were named to the Second Team. Zaytseva was recognized as Freshman of the Year for the conference, while head coach Jeff Westmeyer was named Coach of the Year.

Westmeyer has led Findlay’s women’s tennis program since the 2020-21 season and has guided them to a 78-34 record during his tenure. Under his leadership, Findlay has reached the NCAA Midwest Regional each of the past four seasons.

Wayne State Warriors Women’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s athletics program in Detroit, Michigan. The team competes in NCAA Division II sports as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and offers intercollegiate tennis competition as described on its official athletics website.
