The Wayne State University women’s tennis team will close its regular season with away matches against Grand Valley State University on Friday, April 17, and Ferris State University on Saturday, April 18, according to an April 16 announcement.
These matches are significant as they mark the end of the regular schedule for Wayne State Warriors Women’s Tennis, which competes in NCAA Division II athletics as part of the university’s sports program and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), according to the official athletics website. The team operates from Detroit, Michigan.
Last weekend, Wayne State secured two wins by defeating Purdue Northwest (PNW) and Roosevelt with scores of 6-1. In those contests, the Warriors lost only one singles match against PNW but gave up the doubles point to Grand Valley.
Grand Valley State enters Friday’s contest ranked nineteenth nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and has a strong record this season at 13-1 overall and undefeated at home. Notably, Natasha Sengphrachanh is ranked seventh nationally in singles play with a season record of 23-1. She partners with Valentina Mozas in doubles competition where they are ranked thirty-first nationally. Samantha Barr leads GVSU in her seventh year as head coach.
Ferris State holds an overall record of 11-6 this season with only one conference loss coming against GVSU. The Bulldogs are currently ranked forty-third by ITA. Freshman Madeline Peisley leads their singles lineup while Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer teams up with Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer for doubles play at their top position. Mark Doren serves as head coach for FSU.
Wayne State itself appears in this week’s ITA poll at forty-eighth nationally; Martyna Szpakowska is ranked forty-ninth individually while Malak Arafat stands sixty-ninth among national players. The NCAA also included WSU among nine teams listed in its first regional rankings release this week.
