The Wayne State University women’s tennis team secured a 6-1 victory against Roosevelt University at home on Senior Day, April 11. The win brings Wayne State’s record to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
This match was significant as it honored graduating seniors Malak Arafat, Dea Gorgidze, Martyna Szpakowska, and Shantala Uzcategui for their contributions to the program. According to the university, this group has helped the team reach three consecutive NCAA Championships Quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Roosevelt took an early lead by winning two of three matches. Szpakowska and Justine Beaulieu won their match in the No. 1 position with a score of 6-3. However, Arafat and Uzcategui lost their doubles match in the No. 2 slot (4-6), while freshmen Selin Kayakent and Rebecca Laynes also fell short in the third flight (4-6).
Wayne State dominated singles competition by sweeping all six matches. Arafat earned a straight-set win at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-3), while Szpakowska posted a similar result at No. 2 (6-3, 6-0). Kayakent recorded her fourth consecutive singles victory with a win over Barut (6-4, 6-3). Beaulieu won her match at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-1), Uzcategui prevailed at No.5 (6-1, 6-0), and Laynes secured her second spring singles win after three sets.
Wayne State Warriors Women’s Tennis competes in NCAA Division II athletics according to the official athletics website.
