DETROIT -- Junior right-handed pitcher Griffin Kilander of the Wayne State University baseball program was selected in the 16th round (477th overall) of the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday by the Boston Red Sox. Kilander is the first Warrior to be drafted since Hunter Brown of the Houston Astros in 2019.
Kilander and Brown are two of five WSU hurlers picked in the last 16 years, joining Jared Tobey in 2018 by the Detroit Tigers, Brett Shankin in 2011 by the Seattle Mariners, and Anthony Bass in 2008 by the San Diego Padres.
Kilander appeared in 34 games for his career with Wayne State, starting in 23 of them. He has a win-loss record of 14-6 and a 3.61 ERA. The right-handed veteran pitched 154 and two-thirds innings with six complete games, five most recently in 2024, along with 136 strikeouts, 43 walks, and a batting average against of .268. His best season statistically came as a sophomore in 2023 when he recorded a 2.44 ERA over 62 and two-thirds innings, with a record of 7-3, totaling 46 strikeouts, issuing only 15 walks, and holding opponents to a .256 batting average.
