Wayne State University baseball team achieved a significant victory over Purdue Northwest, sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday. In the first game, Karter Fitzpatrick delivered an outstanding performance by pitching a perfect game, leading Wayne State to a 3-0 win. This marks the first perfect game for Wayne State since the NCAA began tracking such records in 1957.
Fitzpatrick, who is the program's all-time wins leader with a record of 31-8, needed only 64 pitches and 75 minutes to retire all 21 batters he faced. The team's last no-hitter was recorded in March 2019 with contributions from six different pitchers.
In terms of scoring, Owen Tuccinardi contributed with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, followed by back-to-back home runs from Drew Hill and Logan Van Sicklen in the sixth inning. CJ Maury was notable for his performance at bat, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
The second game saw Purdue Northwest take an early lead before Wayne State tied it up. The Warriors then took control in the fourth inning with three runs and added more in subsequent innings to secure an 8-3 victory. Seth Marano pitched effectively for Wayne State, allowing one unearned run over 7.2 innings while striking out four batters.
David Thurman closed out the game, giving up two earned runs but securing the win for Wayne State.
The Warriors will aim to complete a perfect season series against Purdue Northwest on Senior Day Sunday.
