The Wayne State University men's tennis team concluded its participation in the Viking Invitational hosted by Cleveland State University over the weekend. The event, held at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, brought together teams from Duquesne University, Niagara University, Youngstown State University, Case Western Reserve University, and Cleveland State.
During the three-day tournament, Wayne State athletes achieved a record of 25 wins and 16 losses in singles matches. In doubles play, they posted a 12-6 record. Three Wayne State players—George Day, Benjamin Hill, and Tom Wasner—reached the semifinals of the main singles draw. Wasner advanced to the final but was defeated by a player from Youngstown State with scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
In doubles competition, Tom Wasner and Sam Knowles went undefeated with a 4-0 record and won their championship match against a Cleveland State duo with a score of 6-3.
Head coach Bryan Morrow commented on his team's performance: "This was a great tournament for the Warriors. I was really happy with all of the learning and the on-court coaching that we were able to do. The guys had an amazing effort, I was really pleased with how we competed. Our growth as a team this semester has been really solid, all of the hard work that they have put in is showing in the results."
He added: "We won the main draw doubles with Tom (Wasner) and Sam (Knowles), they played very well, had a very solid performance. It has been fun getting that partnership back together after they spent some time together last season."
"In singles, we had three of the four players in the main draw semifinals, we were unable to get a win there, the Youngstown State student-athlete is an unbelievable player."
"I was very pleased with the progress that this team has made. I am very happy with where the moral and spirit of this team is and this was a very good tournament for us."
The next event for Wayne State men's tennis will be hosting its Third Annual Mike Kneale Memorial Doubles Tournament on Friday, October 31 at Detroit's Duchene Athletic Facility.
