The Wayne State University volleyball team secured a four-set victory over Davenport on Saturday during Senior Day at the Matthaei Center. The win brings the Warriors' record to 17-5 overall and 9-3 in the GLIAC, while Davenport falls to 11-12 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
"This was a nice bounce back after a tough match last night," said head coach Tim Koth. "Our middles were outstanding, Kayla (Giroux) offensively and Kat (Stout) defensively... they dictated play and we needed them."
Wayne State won by set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, and 25-16. The team recorded a .261 hitting percentage with 61 kills and 20 errors on 157 attacks. In comparison, Davenport posted a .132 hitting percentage with 44 kills and 22 errors from 167 attempts. The Warriors' most effective set was the fourth, where they hit .387.
Kayla Giroux led Wayne State with 20 kills on 41 swings without an error, resulting in a .488 hitting percentage. This marks her fifth match this season reaching at least 20 kills and eighth such performance in her career. Paige Giehtbrock contributed 14 kills (.273), while Lauren Essenpreis added 11 (.182).
Setter Kayla Dulgar registered her second consecutive double-double—her eighth of the season and the 28th of her career—with 46 assists and 10 digs. She also had one service ace; Giroux added two more for Wayne State.
Defensively, Katerina Stout stood out with eight blocks, including one solo effort. Giehtbrock assisted on five blocks, while Giroux and Dulgar each had three. Leigha Baldwin chipped in two blocks as well.
In terms of digs, five Warriors reached double digits: Kendyl Andrews (18), Giehtbrock (17), Abby Macalaguim (16), Essenpreis (12), and Dulgar (10).
Wayne State will travel next to face Lake Superior State on Friday at 7 p.m.
