Wayne State University's football team lost to Roosevelt University 48-14 on Saturday at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Illinois. This result brings Wayne State's record to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while Roosevelt moves to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Roosevelt began the game with an early touchdown after an 82-yard drive, capped by a screen pass from Tony Chahino to Cam Davis. Wayne State’s defense briefly stopped Roosevelt when Kelly Matthews intercepted a pass in the end zone, but the offense was unable to capitalize.
In the second quarter, Wayne State freshman quarterback Dylan Kress threw an interception on the first play. Roosevelt quickly responded with another touchdown via a long pass from Chahino to Jack Young, Jr. The Lakers extended their lead further before halftime with another touchdown and a field goal.
The third quarter saw Roosevelt’s Carlos Conley return an interception for a touchdown, followed by Brandon Harvey scoring on another interception return. Wayne State answered with its first score of the game: Sterling Anderson caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kress after a key 39-yard reception by Mickey Keller.
In the fourth quarter, Roosevelt added points with a field goal and later scored their final touchdown following yet another interception. Wayne State closed out its scoring with Bishop Thomas catching his first career touchdown pass from Kress late in the game.
Statistically, Roosevelt led total offense with 413 yards compared to Wayne State's 273, though Wayne State had more rushing yards (113) than their opponents (83). The Lakers converted all five of their fourth-down attempts.
For Wayne State, XaVior Tyus led all rushers with 62 yards and also had five receptions. Quarterback Dylan Kress completed 16 of his 25 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns but threw five interceptions. Justyz Tuggle was the team's leading receiver with 50 yards.
Roosevelt's RJ Smith rushed for a team-high of 44 yards while quarterback Tony Chahino passed for three touchdowns and over three hundred yards. Norbert Espadron caught seven passes for eighty yards; Norion Espadron had four catches totaling ninety-one receiving yards.
Wayne State will conclude its season next Saturday against Northern Michigan at Superior Dome; kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
